A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments. Thank you, Sammi!
Word Prompt
Impervious
Challenge
For the first time, my drafts folder has come in handy for a challenge. I remembered writing something that might fit this word prompt and with a little tweak and adjustment have made it work. Moments like these come and go with each of my two at various times and I don’t suppose I shall ever not have some form of this in my future. Motherhood is a challenge I, at times, feel very ill-equipped for.
Your anger is your shield
An act to show you don’t care
Impervious and indestructable you
I know It’s all a big lie
Nothing but an act of bravado
I try to hug you when you hurt
You recoil to push me away
It’s not that I don’t want it, you say
I don’t need it
A sign of weakness, you think
It is so hard to be your mother
To not feel inadequate at times
All I want is for you to know
That all I want is your happiness
To know I love you as you are
Brava! No words! Great poetry. Again, Brava!

They will do so eventually.

I enjoyed reading your poem, Dale. Such beautiful, heartfelt words from a Mom, not to mention the great photos. Yes, I’ve heard how hard and challenging being a parent to teenagers and grown children can be. Still, motherhood is a blessing. My little guy is going to be eleven next month. Soon he will be a teenager. They grow too quickly.

I read that and thought … Glad I have daughters. The adolescent male’s insistent on holding everything in, cos to show it is weakness, must at times be unbearable. 🙂

I’m sure there are girls like that too (moi, At times when I was younger).
At times it so is.😉
Thankfully some times it’s great.

Dear Dale,
Thanks a lot for the tears. I’m obviously NOT impervious. But you know how well I relate to this. It’s amazing how it can come to fiercely loving your child, while at the same time disliking him intensely. But there I go making it about me. I’ll stop and tell you how wonderful this is. I raise my wineglass to you and say, “Cheers to mothers of men.”
Shalom and many hugs,
Rochelle

Dear Rochelle,
It’s good to “wash one’s eyes” occasionally. I know full well this one hits home for you as well. Yes, one can love/dislike at the same time. It’s rather disconcerting, is it not?
I.think Calvin said it quite well!!
Cheers to mothers of men! 🥂
Shalom.and Lotsa love and patience and all the rest!

Children! Out of the box, they’re a gifted treasure. However, once fully assembled and operational one discovers said item(s) are not as advertised. In addition the owners manual is USELESS. Then your left to wing-it.
I’ve always pondered who makes who. Is it the parent(s) that churn their off spring into good children. Or. Is it the off spring that mangle and sculpt their parent(s) into the model of ‘good parent’. The photos would suggest a bit of both.

How brilliantly said, Calvin! Owner’s manual? You got one? Thait ain’t fair, USELESS or not!
That is a very fair assessment. You are such a smart one. And I think you’re also right. It is a bit of both…

No, no owners manual. But for anyone thinking of having children here ‘s a list of good reads that might be useful https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/search/?keywords=puppy+training

Q,
The trials and tribs all mean something. Even the losses become wins as the road gets ironed out with time. And all those trying moments, they’re all worth it. Because you find who you are inside them, and it’s good to know how much it all means. To be reminded.
Beautifully penned, in 99 words. 🙂

They do. They can hurt like hell and then burst your heart with joy. You definitely do. I know you don’t read comments but Calvin said it really well…
Thank you. Very much appreciate your kindness 🙂

I think Calvin has it spot on, btw.
And lemme tell you, chortling is a very underrated exercise. The world needs less fighting and more chortling. But I’m just a modern age hippie, what do I know?

I thought so, too.
I think chortling should be done more, to tell the truth!
