Weekend Writing Prompt #136 – Hubris

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  How you use the prompt is up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise.  If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments.

Word Prompt

Hubris

I admit to struggling with this one as I like to go outside of da box… I gave up 😉  Thank you Sammi for making me work!

Quiet Confidence is Preferred

We should meet. You won’t be disappointed.

That so? You are quite the cocky fellow.

Not cocky, confident. I know that once you’ve kissed me, you will want more.

Wow. Your hubris is remarkable.

My what?

Hubris.

What’s that mean?

Arrogance.  Suffice it to say that I have learnt through experience that those who vaunt their prowess, most often disappoint.

Well I know I won’t disappoint.

I can tell you that I shall not discover your supposed talents.

Why not?

I prefer a quiet confidence. One that does not feel the need to speak.

  1. Q,

    Here hear!

As dey say in da neighba hood . . leave the cocky, take the cannolis.

This was a sweetly designed use of the word. Because hubris is a total turn off, and to flaunt the stuff is to flaunt one’s myriad insecurities. Sorta like those peeps who rev their engines as if they’re about to take flight in the Indy 500. I always think to myself . . what ARE they compensating for?

Hubris is a tough one. I tried thinking of something, with nacho results. And no, I’m not being cheesy by saying it. I had bupkis. So brava with champagne flavored cherries on top to you for taking the “Hey you!” to hubris. Not that I’m surprised in the least . . .

    • B,

      Hear! Here! Heah!

Please. We don’t need that stuff.

It is such a complete turn-off and yes. those that do protest too much (or vaunt too much) are doing exactly that – compensating for their insecurities.

How ’bout you shut up and put your money where your mouth is? Never mind walking the talk… just do the walk 😉

I thank you for your confidence in me. I really, REALLY wanted to try to go outside but frankly.. it ain’t that type o’ word.

      • Heah! I say . . .

We really don’t. I don’t know why certain of us feel the need to go there. I mean, women do it as well, but with men it just feels embarrassing.

They’re compensating for something. And that’s really defeating the purpose of any bells or whistles they’re spit shining. Because it puts the question in your head then.

Walk the line, as Johnny Cash would say. Stop pimping up the preamble and just get on with it.

You always go Juan Soto with your challenges, you know that. 😉

    • And frankly… even if they are given the chance for action, they have hyped themselves up so much, you can’t help but be disappointed.
Thank you. I really don’t like them either.

  2. HA! Yeah, I’m with ya on this … Anyone who feels the need to broadcast their … um … melt-the-knees skill is probably not all that melt-worthy.
    🙂
This was fun to read (though if based on real persons – and I suspect it may well be … oy vey – it had to be less fun to fence out … ;)).
Nicely done, Dale. Worth the wait, it was … (sorry, I had to)
    🙂

  3. Ugh, those overly “confident” ones I just want to bash with a large stick. Puleez, dude. You can’t begin to hold a candle to this woman! She can run circles around your arrogance and kick your pomposity in the arse. Well done, missy! And I’m sure you kicked this bozo to the curb in such record time he didn’t know what hit him.

  4. Dear Dale,

There are somethings that can’t be unseen. That video just went to the top of the list. 😉 What a jerk. Sounds like all talk. Good take on the word. I’m afraid I’ve gone beyond the expiration…totally without the hubris to go for it. A very close word to chutzpah, no?

Shalom and lotsa happy holiday hugs,

    Rochelle

    • Dear Rochelle,

Sorry about that… It just fit, yanno?
If you need to say it so much…
      Nah… You’re not 😉
I always thought chutzpah was more positive, no? Someone who dares without necessarily being cocky about it? It’s how I’ve always used it so maybe I’m out to lunch…😉

Shalom and Lotsa love and mistletoe!
