Love, Deserved

My “prosery” post for Merril’s prompt yesterday on dVerse. Our pieces cannot be longer than 144 words. Mine is exactly 144 words. The bold line comes from a poem by Jane Hirshfield.

Thanks for constantly challenging me, Merril!

Love, Deserved

“Look at her. She never has any trouble finding boyfriends. What’s so special about her?”

I didn’t even know they were talking about me back then. I don’t think I even pondered this at all. Maybe that’s what was supposedly so special about me. I didn’t try to be anything or anyone else but myself. I took life in stride because that’s how I roll.  My friends, some still around, seemed to appreciate me for me.

I don’t know why I was surprised every time love started or ended.  Maybe it was because I half-believed I didn’t even deserve love in the first place.

However, since those teenage years, life has taught me much. I have learned and gained wisdom.  I’ve had my share of hits and misses, highs and lows, joys and sorrows. Know what I have discovered?

Everyone is deserving of love.

    • Dear Rochelle,

So glad it does. And oy is right. Not saying I’ll participate every week – there are many from the FF gang who do and dverse is usually mostly poetry so… Not quite my forte

      Shalom and Lotsa deserved love,

  2. ‘Everyone is deserving of love.’ No truer words, my friend. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we took the time to find that loveable quality in others and nurture it, help it grow.

    Love these thought-provoking pieces.

  3. Q,

Now more than ever, it’s important to understand what love really is. It’s not one thing, and it’s certainly not fated for simply the few. Nope, it’s something that is fed by a selfless belief in humankind. Where even the most solitary individuals among us may find themselves praying for complete strangers.

Love is the flame that provides the light inside the darkest times.

    Brava young lady. 🙂
