Weekend Writing Prompt #158 – Downpour

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments.

I almost didn’t play this week, then remembered an August evening in 2018…  Even though I wrote about it here, I figured it was worth a little redo.  Thanks for hosting Sammi!

Who Needs an Umbrella?

The two friends walked twenty blocks from the restaurant to the theatre.  Summer in Montreal meant Ste. Catherine Street was closed to cars and filled with pedestrians enjoying the warm summer evening.

After the show, they made their way to the exits, talking about their favourite parts, stepped out…

It was not a drizzle, nor a sprinkle. It was a veritable downpour!

“You game?”

“Absolutely!”

Laughing, they walked and skipped like young girls, arriving completely soaked.

“You know, I have an umbrella in my car.”

“So do I!”

  1. Those “singing in the rain with a friend” are THE BEST!!! Also, once you are soaked, it doesn’t matter anymore anyway … so might as well enjoy it! (I LOVE walking in the summer rain) 🙂
Fab photos!!!! You look happy and satisfied. 🙂

  2. Dear Dale,

It’s about time. 😉 I remember those pictures. Umbrella? Jan always reminds me to take one when rain threatens. Nine times out of ten, I leave it in the car. Of course rain does make my hair curl. Nothing better than getting drenched in a summer rain with a friend (as long as you’re not set up at an art fair.)
I love the way you worked the story into 88 words with ease. Well done.

Shalom and lotsa soaking wet hugs,

    Rochelle

    • Dear Rochelle,

😉 Better late than not, right? Would you believe that was two years ago? I’m glad I thought of it because otherwise? We talked about taking them before we walked to the show and both decided nah… we’ll take our chances. Right. So. Right! LOL
Yes, I love a summer rain. And when you are dancing with a friend? All the better! Glad you think I made it work!

Shalom and lotsa skipping in the puddles, love,

      Dale

  3. It always rains especially when one is not carrying their umbrella! Great take on the prompt. I’d love to walk in the rain but I’ll be down with a bad cold the very next day. So I stick very close to my umbrella.

    • It was such a warm night. We were soaked to the bones and I’m sure she also put the head on in the car on her drive home.
      Glad you enjoyed.

    • Thank you, Louise. Julie and I have knows each other for over 40 years (more if we remembered we went to kindergarten together – since we don’t, it doesn’t count) But our true kinship started about ten or so years ago when we reconnected.
      Friends are the best!

Thanks (had to prove it was real 😉)

    • We actually both decided to leave them because what were the chances? Apparently rather high… 🤣😂
I am glad it does, Jilly. Thank you.

Umbrellas Shmumbrellas! Who needs the cover when you can get results like THAT? Two bathing beauties about town, skipping to the beat of a new old fashioned Gene Kelly song that rhymes with the spring in their steps and the summer in their eyes.

I might have . . I say might . . . have looked at those pics a few times over. And I remember that night! But to see it here, in such technicolored splendor, well . . that makes for the tastiest of cakes. 😉

  7. Hi Dale,
I want to let you know that I nominated you for the Liebster Blog award. I know you are busy and I don’t know if you participate in these things, but I wanted to let you know I was thinking of you. I won’t be offended if you don’t do the award thing and pass on it.
    Take care my friend,
    Tim
