A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments. Always a thanks to Sammi for hosting this.
Okay, okay… blame the sappy series I’ve been convinced to watch for this little story. I completely borrowed one of the story lines 😉
Listen to the Niggle
Between sobs, she hiccupped, “Why doesn’t he want to be with me?”
“He told you he didn’t want a relationship, what did you expect?”
“I thought – maybe – I love him!”
“Did he say it back?
“No.”
“Didn’t you feel a niggle in your gut?”
“I ignored it.”
“Remember what Maya said?”
“‘When someone tells you who they are, believe them.’ I’m such an idiot!”
“Dreamer, maybe…”
Yep, that niggle in the heart. I’d say a Mrs. Gardener knew it, too … if in a very different way 😉 (oh, yeah, shameful plug for “Outlawed Hope.”)
And … this was fab, because it immediately tugged on another story I know well … which is what good stories do.

Good for you plugging it – I still need to read it! (Think Imma read it next, actually.)
Glad you thought mine was fab!

It was! And it felt a bit like a visit, because of the immediate association to niggling guts … 😉

Ah, LOVE the video and the song you added! Now, just to be clear, my association is in a very VERY different direction, but still in the same bodily location … 😉

Isn’t it a pretty version? I love Bonnie Raitt, but this one was so gentle. Yes, yes, very different… but yanno… 😉

Good one … but never heard of niggle until now … Damn – learn something every day.

I’ve always used niggling instead of niggle, as in I’ve a niggling feeling about something…
Glad you liked.

A little feeling in the gut that all is not well. Good one, Dale.

That feeling should not be ignored, no matter how much one wishes it were lying. Thank you, John.

How often do we though?

I can say I have ignored it too often. Not trusting it, or maybe lacking the confidence in myself to trust me.

Tiny niggles grow to giant warnings ..tell me how we manage to turn a blind eye until it’s too late. I always say the slightest niggle and I am off! Do I …never…
Beautiful video I loved it. Absolutely brilliantly written Dale 💜🎄

You’re right. There are some (I’ve been guilty) who don’t trust their niggle and dismiss it.
I love Bonnie Raitt but when I found this version, had to use it. Thank you so much, Willow. 🧡

We should always follow those niggling niggles!
I’ve only heard it used as a verb, not a noun.😀

That we should! Took me a while before I trusted my niggle as being a legit thing 😉
One new word to the file! 🙂

Dear Dale,
The heart just isn’t a realist, no matter how much to self-talk, no matter how much the gut niggles. Well written.
Shalom and lotsa dreamy hugs,

Dear Rochelle,
The heart can (and often does) drown out the gut’s niggling. Thank you.
Shalom and lotsa niggle-free love,

Niggles in the gut are there for a reason. Ignore at your peril!

That’s the one, that niggle deep down, when your friend says, never believe a man who says he’s honest, cos he’s not, he’s a con. And that niggle persists. Believe in that niggle. It’s our 4 minute warning, 🙂

Yes, indeed. The person on the outside often sees more clearly than the one going through it. Must listen to the niggle! I love that 4-minute warning…

I always have to listen to the niggle, even if I never called it a niggle because I never knew it WAS called a niggle. And truth be told . . that word! It’s just . . . I dunno. Couldn’t they have come up with another word? Would it have killed them to stay in the lab another five minutes in order to figure out a better word?
And I think the reason most don’t believe it when someone tells you who they are is because they’re not listening in the first place. I’d venture that many a niggle was of the self inflicted variety.
That word . . . I can’t get past it.

B,
It is a very strange word. It’s the smaller version of the “Voice” or the “knot in your stomach” or “discomfort”… ya, okay. I got nurhin’.
This is very true. Or you hear them but don’t believe them until they prove it. I’m thinking pretty much all the niggles are of the self-inflicted variety. I’d say, in my case – as I’ve on occasion ignored the niggle – it is a lack in self-confidence, not trusting our own damn self.
I hear you.

Ugh, I can’t. I just can’t. LOL.
I think mayhaps you underestimated yourself in the past, but you learned from those times and now you have come to understand yourself as constantly evolving. That is growth, and unfortunately it’s something too many people stop doing.

At least you didn’t give me a “yawn” video 😉
Yes, it was definitely underestimating myself – which comes from that lack of self-confidence that I suffered from for years and years. I am happy to say that yes, I have definitely learned and hope to continue to evolve and grow. I think the alternative is not an option.
