Whining for Wine

Merril is hosting Prosery Monday at dVerse today.  Hard to resist.  So, why?  Only thing is we must use the phrase:  “I prefer keeping in mind even the possibility that existence has its own reason for being.” A line in Wisława Szymborska’s “Possibilities”.  Well. I did what I could with it 😉

Bundled up against the biting cold, I try to remember Charles Dickens’ quote about it being that type of day in March when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold and can’t remember the rest of it, but know it’s bang on today.

“Gah!” Terri breaks my reverie. “Why does March have to be this way?  Like pick a temp, already! Be cold till you’re not but stop teasing us with a few warm days in between!”

I laugh at my friend.  “You know, I prefer keeping in mind even the possibility that existence has its own reason for being.”

“What? Da hell hogwash is that? There is no reason to this season!  What purpose is there for being so unreasonable? And why are we not inside by the fire with a glass of wine?”

“We had to earn it first!”

“Hmph!

  1. The quote you were looking for was fromDickens’ Great Expactations. “It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” Very apt for your fine piece, though I have to say I’m with Terri on this one. 🙂

    • I actually was going to write the whole quote but figured that was a huge cheat 😉 So I pretended not to know it all 😀
And yeah, I’m with Terri too!

    • I used the quote because you sent it to me!! And I figured I could pretend my MC didn’t know it wall coz… 144 words to be taken up by someone else’s words is the easy way out 😉 And thank you 🙂

  2. Dear Dale,

I’m impressed with how you worked that sentence into a story. The wine and fire you definitely earned. ❤ As for March…so true. Pick a temp and stick with it.

    Shalom and lotsa warm hugs,

    • Dear Rochelle,

Frankly, so am I!! I was afraid I was pushing it and then thought, why not? Definitely earned. 🍷🔥!
      March is truly psychotic.

Shalom and lotsa winey and fiery love,

      Dale

  3. A ha ha…. had to earn it first!…. the March way earning! That’s a load to handle!
Love it, Dale. Coincidentally [or not…] today the sun is high and warm [where it sees you] and while you walk all smiling absorbing the rays, whoosh comes a blade of frosty wind freezes your blood on the spot! 😎😬

  4. This made me laugh, Dale! Well done. You worked the line in, and wine and a fire sound great a little later. It’s cold here again today–not as windy, but cloudy. Thanks for participating!

    • So glad it did, Merril! At first that line seemed easy peasy but when you read it properly, realise waitaminute…so especially glad you thought I done good 😉
Yeah, it is here, too. Not as bad as yesterday or Sunday and going up as the week goes on. Yay! I’m glad I did!

  5. Q

I usually whine if there is no wine in the house and I’m feeling it. But the fire, not so much. Just gimme the wine and I’ll feel plenty toasty without the need for the indoor fire pit, which has always creeped me out.

Wine . . mebe wine tonight. Hmmmm.
