Choosing the Light – Friday Fictioneers

Good Friday morning, my peeps.  I sure hope your neck of the woods isn’t too wet or cold or snowy.  It’s a gross morning here.  First there was snow and now it is raining and windy.  It’s gonna be a crappy drive into work.  Why do I not work from home, again?  Oh yeah. Cuz I have the knack to choose the wrong job.  Will fix that right quick in the new year, tell you what!  So… For two days now I’ve been struggling to come up with something for this photo for Friday Fictioneers.  Can’t not play, eh?  It is my photo and it would just be rude to diss the boss.  This time of year is a challenging one for me (and for many others, I do not doubt) and it’s nigh on impossible to not focus on all the happenings that have happened in December for the past thirteen years – with a new one added less than a week ago, no less.  Not very original, either, as this is pretty much autobiographical.  C’est la vie!  Should you wish to play along or read what others have come up with, just click on the frog below and add your link.  If I don’t manage to come back to blog, I shall wish you all a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah or whatever it is you celebrate!

How does she do it, you think?

Do what?

Always find the light, the silver lining, the positive.  It’s annoying, actually.

You’re just jealous because you’re an old crabby-ass.

Am not!

Okay, you’re not. Always.

Hmph!  Still.  With all the shit she has been through, you’d think she would be sad.

Maybe that’s why she focuses on the light.  Because she knows the dark. Sounds cliché, but truth, don’t you think?

True.  She probably does have sad moments but keeps them to herself.

Exactly.

What say we drop by and say hello? The light’s on.

I think she’d love it.

  1. After my dad died, my mom found very little joy in keeping Christmas. But she lived close to 20 more years, and slowly rejoined the rest of her loved ones in celebrating. Grief is a thief, but it can be defeated!

  2. Dear Dale,

This sounds like someone I know. 😉 I’ve heard that attitude determines altitude which is why she’s a high flyer and a joy to have as a friend. ❤

    Shalom and lotsa positive hugs.

    • It is, isn’t it? I love the droppers-by. It happens less and less. Same with the phones. It’s like no one dares call before texting..
She is always in a good mood 😉

  3. Sounds like you’ll need all the optimism you can generate this weekend, Dale. We’re hearing for ON & QC a forecast of snow followed by rain with winds gusting to over 100 kliks — and then COLD. Power outages already started. Keep safe and warm if you can.
As I told Keith, those houses are so Quebecois. Hurray for those who keep the light shining!

    • So far, we got a snow last night which has changed to rain. The wind is picking up but it’s still 4, going up to 6 today!
Overnight, however, temps drop. Gonna be ugly for sure! Mind you, those in meteorology do love to make peeps panic for nothing.
And yes, this house is in old Boucherville.
      And yes, hurray for them!

        • Don’t you love WP. It especially gives grief when using our phones, I find.
And yes, the media does love a good panic. It’s getting a little old, dontcha think?
Hope you don’t freeze your buns off and have a very Merry Christmas!

    • Thank you, Jan. It is more difficult for some or for many at certain times. I think a little effort goes a long way, even if it is not reached 100%

  4. This made me smile, Dale. I always look for the bright side of things (and I’ve been told I am annoying about it). Still, I can’t change, and I hope your Christmas is filled with bright moments and good cheer. I hope 2023 is a good year and comes with improved working conditions.

    • So glad it did, Dan. May we annoy the hell outta the sourpusses 😉 My Christmas will be filled with lovely and bright moments and definitely good cheer… And I hope the same for you. Bring on 2023 and all the cool stuff!

  5. Wishing you much light and joy now and always, my friend. Never apologize for finding it. But good luck with finding a new job because a bad job can zap everything from you–and those annoying co-workers. 😏

The photo is winter melancholy but still beautiful–perfect match.
I hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend! 💙

  6. I loved this photo. Sent me back to an old Friday Fiction that I really do need to write as a longer piece (won’t say that scary word novel yet!).
I love your conversational piece! And why don’t people drop by anymore? It used to be a thing didn’t it.
Wish I was closer and could come over to soak up that positivity! Do have a great Christmas!

    • Thank you! Oooh…. that is pretty cool.
And glad you enjoyed it. Why don’t they? We’ve become this arm’s length society, haven’t we?
Merry Christmas to you, Miranda! xo

  8. Q

Some people just have that light, no need for the stars or electricity when it comes to the light I’m talking about. They possess a spirit that carries and swells and becomes contagious to anyone around them. And here, you pen her story. Beautifully.

  9. Seems their friend is smart enough not sit in the dark!
BTW – Your blog is the reason I connected to Friday Fictioneers! Thank you for that gift. Merry Christmas, may the light shine through whatever darkness threatens and may the new year bring all the newness you desire.

  10. This time of year can be so difficult. I think it must be harder in the North. Winter + Christmas = double whammy. It’s very warm and bright here. I’m sitting under the AC as I type this. Follow the light, D… just not THAT light… 😀

  11. This story of yours may be one of my favorite ones yes, Dale. I’d like to think/hope I’m that one who is always positive, who always shines light, yet has a few dark corners, hidden. Thank goodness for friends who find our light on, and visit. I think you and I are so similar this way, friend. xo

  12. There’s something to be said for owning up to your own “old crabby-ass” personality. I mean, all those people spreading light are great but it can get to be a bit much. The world needs balance.

  13. I love working from home. Used to work outside my house in offices and fast food restaurants for decades. Hated it. Especially since I don’t have a car, and it took me an hour and twenty minutes to get to work and and another hour and twenty to get back! Two hours and forty minutes a day, and I don’t get paid for my time on the road.

For the last year, I’ve been doing surveys over the phone from home, with my three cats to keep me company. Loving every minute!
