Ruth was so concentrated on ripping out the vines creeping along the top of the cedar hedge, she never heard her son approach.

His\ “Mom, what’re you doing?” nearly made her jump out of her skin

“What’s it look like I’m doing? I’m pulling out these vines.

“Why? They’re kinda pretty, no?

“I admit they are. I’ve never seen yellow ones like these. Usually, they’re those pink ones that look like morning glories.”

“Poor unwelcome flowers.”

“They’re weeds!”

“Tomayto, tomahto.”

“They’ll take over. Remember the ‘Rumor Weed’?”

Ha ha Mom. You’re hilarious.

We are not a religious family at all. However, a friend of mine got us hooked on Veggie Tales and one of our favourites was LarryBoy and the Rumor Weed

The movie is a whole 33 minutes long but for anyone who wants to, just click here.

From the youngest age

Two, if rumours are true

When Mommy was busy

Out the door I flew

Mommy had no idea

I’d gone gallivanting

Till the phone rang

Guess who came visiting?

An exasperated sigh

Please send her home

What to do?

I still roam!

This was not an easy one, that is for sure. Thanks, Sammi for forcing us outside of our comfort zones.

You’d cut off your nose to spite your face, wouldn’t you?

You stand there, face set in stone, deaf to my suggestions

I thought you were being obnoxious, but no

You’re a whole other level of inflexible

You remain obdurate in your refusal to cede

Thwarting the potential for collaboration

Till one day when you get the brilliant idea

To do what I suggested months before

And audaciously claim it as yours

One look and I know

Your touch will follow

goosebumps rise

a kaleidoscope’s colourful patterns

jumbling for attention

Weekend Writing Prompt #159 – Intrepid

My laptop is giving me a hard time, lately. OK, I did drop it and catch it in such a manner as the screen is disconnected, sorta from the keyboard but still. I’ve not been able to connect to the internet very well so when it works, great; when it doesn’t, not so great.  I’m behind in reading other participants in the various challenges… I’m doing da best I are!  This was written two days ago (just to give you an idea!

You should have been a fish

But you were too cozy

More than two weeks late

You decided you were ready

You had to be born a ram

You’ve been charging forward since

Seeking the next thrill

Taking life by the horns

Wanting to try it all

Intrepid

Thy name is Iain

I almost didn’t play this week, then remembered an August evening in 2018…  Even though I wrote about it here, I figured it was worth a little redo.  Thanks for hosting Sammi!

Who Needs an Umbrella?

The two friends walked twenty blocks from the restaurant to the theatre.  Summer in Montreal meant Ste. Catherine Street was closed to cars and filled with pedestrians enjoying the warm summer evening.

After the show, they made their way to the exits, talking about their favourite parts, stepped out…

It was not a drizzle, nor a sprinkle. It was a veritable downpour!

“You game?”

“Absolutely!”

Laughing, they walked and skipped like young girls, arriving completely soaked.

“You know, I have an umbrella in my car.”

“So do I!”

Wow. Congrats to Sammi for doing this prompt for three years already!  Looking forward to what’s to come!

There is always that one house on the block where people congregate. As kids, it is the meet-up or the hang-out place – if the mom says it is okay – and if she says ‘no’ today, it will not stop you from coming back tomorrow. There is nothing obviously special about this house. It is like everyone else’s in size and shape and number of rooms. And yet, the kids know. Here, they are welcome. Here, they can be kids, and whether related or not, will be yelled at if they get too much. Here, they feel like they belong, part of a family. Here, this is not a house. It is a home.

Mine.

April is a Fickle Month

Spring! Oh, beautiful Spring! You are here at last!

Flora is coming to life

Birds are singing and squirrels are frolicking

This April day filled with sunshine and blue skies

Fools us into thinking warm days are here

“En avril ne te découvre pas d’un fil”

goes the French proverb

Which means, literally

In April, do not remove a thread (of clothing)

Much as we wish to divest ourselves

of our many layers

Replace woollen fabrics with cotton

Heavy coats with light sweaters

We should beware

“Le fond de l’air est frais”

Translated literally as

“The bottom of the air is cool”

What? That makes no sense!

But it does.

That initial warmth you feel

Has a bite to it that sneaks in

Reminding you, April is a fickle month
